Professor Maria Lohan is Director of Research for the School of Nursing and Midwifery and a Fellow of the Centre for Evidence and Social Innovation (CESI) in Queen’s University Belfast and a former Peter Wall International Scholar at University of British Columbia. Maria is a sociologist by background (PhD, Trinity College Dublin) but her work is strongly interdisciplinary.

The central questions running through her research include: How does feminism impact upon men’s lives? How do men think about their bodies and their health and especially how do men think about reproduction and parenting? Maria is currently leading a large multi-site RCT of an educational intervention throughout the UK, funded by the NIHR (£1.7million) - The Jack Trial. The intervention she and her team have developed is called If I were Jack and is targeted at secondary school aged boys with the aim of preventing unintended teenage pregnancy.
